Embracing Conflict: A Systems-Based Approach for Leaders and Teams

Zing Collaborative, Events, Embracing Conflict

Instead of managing conflict or forcing ourselves to deal with it, we can learn to embrace it. In this highly interactive class, you will gain confidence and skills to navigate conflict in your relationships, your teams, and with customers/clients.

You’ll learn how to recognize and bring to light conflict that is under the surface and within a system, along with your personal patterns related to conflict.

Learning objectives:

  • Increase your awareness of conflict that is present, yet unnamed, in systems and teams that you’re part of.

  • Develop the ability to work with conflict as something that wants to emerge, shift, or change within a group or a team.

  • Confidently speak about, and subsequently work with, conflict in a clear and kind way.

  • Move from a stuck place of opposing positions and opinions into a place of shared desires, values, and future possibilities.

  • Gain concrete tools and approaches to apply to situations of conflict and change.

Making Remote Work Work

Your laundry room is officially your home office, and your precious home office has been repurposed for the “virtual classroom.” Working in sweatpants and attending Zoom Happy Hours lost their feeling of novelty months (almost a year now…?!) ago. Your motivation ebbs and flows; your feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, and procrastination seem much higher than usual; and you’re trying to prep for your noon call while the members of your household keep asking you “what’s for lunch?”

If any of the above sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Suddenly, our personal and professional lives have been conflated into one chaotic scene called “working from home.” The things that worked before aren’t always working now.

We don’t just need tools to “work more effectively remotely.” We also need tools to “work more effectively” in the ever-evolving chaos of our current reality.

During this session, we will explore this topic from two primary perspectives:

  • Mental and Emotional - how can we show up at our best each day? How can we restore our inner reserves? How can we navigate the inevitable ups and downs of this time with ease and grace? How can we find energy and motivation when we feel depleted?

  • Structural and Tactical - how can we work more effectively remotely? What are the tools, systems, structures, and technologies that can support us along the way? How can we structure our days to maximize our effectiveness and results?

The session will include a mix of exploration, reflection, and practical tools that you can apply back out in the real (remote) world.

This session is offered in partnership with UWSP; you can sign up via the UWSP website here.

During this free community offering, we will come together to set intentions for the days and weeks ahead.

We’ll start with a brief meditation, and then we’ll all have an opportunity to express our high dream for the future - our greatest hopes, desires, and wishes for what is possible for our country and our world.

Together, we will take a collective breath; set intentions; and connect in community.

This is a nonpartisan event, where we will collectively honor these agreements:

  • We come from a place of curiosity and compassion

  • We seek first to understand

  • We interact from a place of integrity

  • We remain non-partisan

  • We refrain from speaking about specific individuals or candidates

If this opportunity feels nourishing and supportive, please feel free to sign up via this link. You’ll receive a zoom link within 24 hours of the event, which will be at 7 pm Central Time on Monday November 2nd.

Staying Grounded when the Ground Feels Shaky (Offered as part of Madison Fitness Week)

Zing Collaborative, Events, Staying Grounded When the Ground Feels Shaky

“When the floor falls out from underneath you, build a new floor.” This quote was shared by the owners of Crescendo Coffee Shop in Madison and it has felt like the perfect representation of this time.

During this session, we’ll talk about how to stay grounded when the ground feels shaky. Specifically, we’ll explore how to name, acknowledge, and talk about our current reality; how to consciously rebuild and redesign as we emerge from it; how to connect to small things each day that help us to feel our best; how to notice our triggers; and how to focus on the things that we can control. '

This session will be offered as part of Madison Fitness Week (which, this year, is a virtual month). Through the link below, you can purchase a ticket for $20 which grants access to all of the virtual workouts and workshops. The majority of proceeds are being donated to Urban Triage.

Who are We Becoming? Honoring the Journey and Creating From What's Happening (even when we don't know what's happening)

Zing Collaborative, Virtual Events, Who are we Becoming, Honoring the Journey and Creating From What's Happening (even when we don't know what's happening)

During this free community session, we will reflect on the journey we’ve been on over these last several months, and tune into what we’ve been learning about ourselves along the way.

We will tune into the grappling within us…the things that are emerging and arising, and the new version of ourselves we are becoming.

Together, we will -

  • Look back at where we’ve been

  • Explore what we’ve learned so far

  • Sit with what’s been emerging along the way

  • Take time to honor and acknowledge the new version of ourselves that is emerging (or perhaps that is longing to emerge, but hasn’t yet)

  • Explore ways to create from the reality in front of us, especially when the reality is wildly uncertain and ever-changing

  • Examine how we can balance making plans + actions, alongside the uncertainty of what lies ahead

  • Tune into the (sometimes conflicting and often confusing) conflict between ‘giving ourselves space to be and feel and step back’ and ‘taking action and moving forward even when we don’t feel like it.’

I’ll also take a few minutes at the end to answer any questions that you have about The Garden.

Please bring a journal and pen.

If you’d like to join us, you may register here. After doing so, you’ll receive an email from me which will include the Zoom link.

Can’t wait to see you on Friday August 21st if this speaks to you.

With much love,

Sarah

Tools for Living with Roger Bird (Free, Virtual Event)

During this session, I’m thrilled to talk with my friend Roger Bird.

Zing Collaborative, Events, Tools for Living, Leadership, Staying Grounded, COVID-19 Support, Free Event

Roger has an incredible story, which involves chapters as a professional cyclist, an executive, the founder of multiple non-profits, businesses, and side hustles,  and - a chapter that he continues to create each day as he lives his recovery through his words and his actions.

Over the years, Roger has created a set of tools for living in integrity each day - named affectionately by the two of us his “CoolShit Toolkit.” Roger has used these tools as pillars during times of darkness and continues to use them daily as a way to live true to his values.

During this session, we’ll talk about Roger’s journey and we’ll give you a glimpse into the CoolShit Toolkit in case you, too, would like to implement some of these tools in your own life.

Zing Collaborative, Events, Tools for Living, Roger Bird, Sarah Young, COVID19 Conversation, Productivity

This session may be helpful for you if you relate to any of the following:

  • You’re currently navigating a period of hardship, uncertainty, ambiguity, and/or decreased motivation during the time that we’re in.

  • You’re looking for concrete tools that will help you feel happier, and more productive, each day.

  • You’re looking for tactical ways to continue to prioritize the things that really matter and let go of the rest.

  • You could use a new perspective for sifting through the noise and getting clear on the stuff that matters most.

  • You mentor or lead others who might benefit from these tools.

We are delighted to offer this session for free. Please sign up with your email via this link to receive a link to join via Zoom.

Looking forward to seeing you then!

Now What? Creating from Unexpected Changes (Free Virtual Session)

Zing Collaborative, Events, Now What - Creating from Unexpected Changes

If you have experienced sudden changes - job loss, furlough, reduced hours, layoffs - or partners/loved ones navigating any of these things - you are not alone.

During this session, we will explore how to honor and acknowledge the current reality that we are in, how to create from it - through long term visioning and short term planning, how to hold the reality of ‘shelter’ (paying the bills, putting food on the table) with the desire for ‘poetry’ (doing something that brings us joy and creates meaning), and some tactical next steps related to resume, LinkedIn, and looking at “what’s next.”

We'll also be joined for part of the session by Abigail Darwin from Robert Half staffing agency, to share a bit about the landscape - what's happening out there? Who's hiring? And what does the job market look like in these current times?

As always, you'll leave with actionable tools that you can apply afterward.

We are delighted to offer this session for free and ask that you please sign up in advance by 9 am Central Time on Friday, May 8th.

Women, Water, Leadership, and Land

The Experience

Women, Water, Leadership, and Land is a nourishing leadership experience for women working in conservation and sustainability.

It's an opportunity to unplug; to refuel and be inspired; to deeply explore who we are as women and as leaders; and to connect to ourselves, to nature, and to stunning colleagues.

It's for women who are looking for a different type of leadership experience. It's for women who crave a balance of powerful facilitated experiences and the option for solitude;

for deep conversation alongside time for reflection and walking in the woods.

It's for women who are craving an opportunity to breathe deeply - surrounded by nature, and in the company of incredible women.

The Venue

This experience will be held at The Land - a one of a kind 162-acre sanctuary at the intersection of the Pacific Coast and Mendocino’s Anderson Valley, 2.5 hours north of San Francisco.

It’s where California gets wild and the scale becomes majestic with old growth redwoods, endless fields and rivers, great weather and lots of sunshine.

The Land is based on connection - connection to ourselves, connection to nature, connection to animals, connection to the food we eat and where it comes from, and connection to community.

Flow and Structure

The retreat will begin the afternoon of Wednesday, March 4th.

Over the course of the upcoming days, we will come together during powerfully facilitated experiences - centered on the topics of leadership, alignment and balance, and purposeful choice and action. The days will include a blend of group experiences and solo time to reflect, spend time in the woods, and enjoy movement such as hiking and yoga.

We will conclude the experience on the afternoon of Friday, March 6th.

Once you arrive onsite the afternoon of Wednesday, March 4th, everything will be taken care of during your stay - elegant accommodations; delicious farm to table meals; and all experiences and offerings.

Details and Logistics

GETTING TO THE LAND

The Land is located in Northern California, at 18501 VanZandt Resort Road, Philo, CA 95466. It is about a 90 minute drive from the Sonoma County Airport, or about two and a half hours from SFO. There are ample ground transportation options from either airport.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Accommodations will be houses and cabins with a mix of solo and shared spaces. All accommodations include views of nature, tea and coffee, EO self care products in all bathrooms, Wifi, and easy access to trails and grounds.

INVESTMENT

Our intention is to make this experience accessible for all interested women, coming from a variety of industries. As a result, we are offering a tiered pricing structure as follows:

$980: women coming from the non-profit or public sector

$1030: women coming from micro-businesses (6 or fewer people)

$1400: women coming from for-profit businesses

Your Hosts

AMANDA GUMBERT

I am a mom, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a gardener, a conservationist, and professional soil and water geek. Professionally, I am lucky enough to work in the academic world, providing education and technical information to those whose decisions impact our natural resources. Personally, I seek out happiness in ways that incorporate the wonderful aspects of my life with an underlying love of land and water.

CLARE LINDAHL

In 2017 I became the first female CEO of the Soil and Water Conservation (SWCS). I am passionate about people so the position is a great fit as SWCS is THE association for conservation professionals. My entire career has been inspired by the river that I was raised along, the Mighty Mississippi. As well as inspiring my work, water and wildlife inspire me personally. Every morning I wake up and look over the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers in Des Moines, Iowa as I seek to preserve and better our natural resources so they can inspire and provide for decades to come.

REBECCA POWER

Rebecca Power is an artist, scientist, learner, educator, and engaged citizen. She has been working in fields of conservation science and outreach for over 30 years, most recently as the Director of the North Central Region Water Network, a collaboration among universities to help address the big water issues we’re facing in the Midwestern US and beyond. As an artist, she loves exploring the power of art and conversations around art to inspire, teach, and refresh – to help us consider the world in new ways, or to remind us of truths that have become hidden or forgotten. She is most inspired by work that brings science, local knowledge, community conversation, art, and place together.

SARAH YOUNG

Sarah is grateful to work with incredible individuals, teams, and organizations to increase their positive impact in the world, through her company, Zing Collaborative. She is an entrepreneur, nature lover, leadership coach and thought partner, experience creator, and dog mama to a hilarious and equally nature-loving rescue pup named Duke. She believes in Triple Bottom Line: People, Profit, and Planet, and Zing Collaborative is a proud member of 1% for the Planet - donating 1% of all sales to nonprofits working to preserve our precious planet.

Aliveness at Work (CultureCon 2019)

During this breakout session at CultureCon 2019, we will explore how we, as individuals, can feel more alive at work...and how, as leaders, we can create cultures and environments and work places that feel more alive. Supported by data and research, and infused with practical take-aways, participants will leave with concrete actions that they can begin to apply following the session.

Key Questions We’ll Explore Include:

  • What can we, as individuals, do to feel more alive and joyful at work - regardless of what is happening in our external circumstances?

  • What can we, as leaders of teams or projects or organizations, do to create cultures that feel more alive?

  • What are some of the most powerful and tangible things that we can do - starting tomorrow - that really move the needle?

Spring Founders & Leaders Escape for Men

Spring Founders & Leaders Escape for Men

The Spring Founders & Leaders Retreat for Men is an all-inclusive, two-and-a-half day retreat that will be held at the Justin Trails Resort, just outside of Sparta, WI, on the eco-resort’s 200-acres of woodland, meadows, and hills.

During the retreat we’ll focus on three primary themes:

  • ZOOMING UP from the day-to-day details of running a company to the big picture. We’ll do this through strategic questions and conversations that will fundamentally shape the future of your life, your leadership, and your company.

  • TUNING IN to who you are as a person, leader, partner, father, and friend; to what matters most and how to cultivate those things as part of your daily rhythms; and to the beauty of nature and its grounding power.

  • COLLABORATION, CONNECTION & MASTERMIND-STYLE DISCUSSIONS with a carefully-curated group of other founders & leaders who get it, and who are navigating similar challenges, issues, and opportunities and believe in doing the work to get to incredible outcomes.

Each day, we will hold fiercely facilitated deep-dive strategy sessions. Conversations will happen within a framework of support and understanding around the bigness of what you’re carrying and leading. This game-changing, deep work will be super-charged by doing it collectively as a community (specifically: a badass community of other super smart, thoughtful, and high-impact leaders, founders, and CEOS) and will be paired with time for individual reflection and white space.

Early mornings will be reserved for optional physical activity and time in nature, while evenings may be spent around a bonfire, in deep conversation with other participants, or reflection on the day’s work.

The whole retreat will be designed—with your input—to be an intentional and thoughtful experience that’s aligned with all the different parts of your life. It will be inspiring, exciting, and profound (I know because I’ve seen it happen before).

Reconnecting to Your Creativity

Reconnecting to Your Creativity

Creativity.

What if it doesn’t have to mean only “art,” and instead, can be a place from which we operate on a daily basis?

What if it can mean tapping into a deeper part of ourselves - that leads to more joy, more inspiration, and more lightness?

And what if it lives within each of us, even if we think that we “aren’t creative people?”

On Thursday April 25th, I invite you to join me for an exploration of these questions. We’ll look at the various ways that creativity can look and feel for each of us. We’ll explore how we can tap into our own creativity, and what stands in the way. And you’ll leave with concrete practices that you can take back to your life to connect to the creativity that lives within you.

This event is free but does require advanced registration, and may fill.

Sign up here to reserve your spot.

Please note: this event is at DreamBank’s new location, which is in the Spark building on East Washington Ave (across from Festival Foods). There’s ample street parking nearby (on East Wash, as well as on the side streets behind the building), as well as several parking garages nearby there’s a new garage on the corner of East Main and South Livingston).

I look forward to seeing you then!

Nature as Our Teacher

We’ve all heard the term “force of nature.” The thing is, each of us is a force of nature – but rarely do we truly hear the lessons that nature has for us, or boldly claim them out in our worlds. During this interactive and thought-provoking session, we’ll explore the ways we can tune in, open up, and integrate the many lessons nature has for us. We’ll discover ways we can lean into nature to become more confident, to find our voices, and to more powerfully step into our leadership and our joy. We’ll explore the power of the divine feminine, of mother earth, the moon, and within ourselves. And we’ll examine lessons from ancient wisdom and how we can apply it to our modern world and everyday lives.

This session is part of the 2018 BRAVA THRIVE CONFERENCE, a full-day event. Learn more and register for the conference here.

Conscious Leadership: Why Leadership is Mostly About Paying Attention

  • Hawkeye College- Buchanan Hall (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We live in a world of more intake than ever before. At any given moment, it seems that there are is an infinite list of things competing for our attention: an unanswered email, an incoming text, a task we've been meaning to get to for the last week, and our team member who has a question. It can make us feel like we're playing Whack-a-Mole: trying to keep our heads above water while making progress on our ongoing to-do lists. When this is our reality, it is almost impossible to effectively lead ourselves—let alone other people. At the end of the day, leadership happens in the moments, and in order to lead effectively, we need to be present in those moments. Explore how to increase overall leadership effectiveness by tuning in, clearing out distractions, and creating meaningful connections with the people around us.

What you'll gain:

  • Understand what "conscious leadership" means and how it looks in everyday life
  • Specific practices, structures, and routines that will support you leading in a more conscious and compelling way
  • Tools and approaches to create a positive impact with other people and in your environment
  • Strategies for successfully leading with challenging people and in difficult situations

Integrity in Real-Time: HR at UW Conference

Integrity in Real-Time: HR at UW Conference

Integrity. It’s a concept that most of us can get behind pretty easily, and a concept that most of us try to uphold. But what does integrity look like in real-time? When we are asked to communicate a decision that we completely disagree with? When we overhear gossip in the breakroom that we do completely agree with? Or when we feel our personal values may be in conflict with the values of our leader, our team, or our organization?

During this interactive and thought-provoking session, we’ll nurture honesty as we explore the concept of integrity in real-time; examine situations when it can feel challenging and confusing to know whether we are in alignment with our integrity; and uncover what we can do moving forward.

The session will include discussion, storytelling, application, and actionable strategies to apply after the session.

You will explore and learn:

  • Your leadership values
  • Your individual motivators
  • Your leadership purpose statement

  • Ways to build and develop meaningful relationships and connections
  • The role of gratitude and generosity in influential leadership

Key Activities: Complete The Motivators Assessment to identify your core drivers, draft core leadership values, draft leadership purpose statement, and build relationships with higher education leaders.  Assessment to be taken prior to course start date.

About Culture Community:

Culture Community is a non-profit organization built to bring enthusiasts together, in-person and electronically, to foster culture as a focal point of every organization, regardless of industry, size, or stage. Building an intentional culture is as much about what you do as what you don’t do. We meet on the second Thursday of every month to share knowledge on different cultural ideas, so organizations can be deliberate and conscious in their actions.

The New Loyalty: What Got Us Here Won't Get Us There

The New Loyalty: What Got Us Here Won't Get Us There

I'm looking forward to being part of the UW Rethinking Leadership Conference once again this year. I had the chance to participate last year, as well, and it was a fantastic event! Many great speakers, advanced topics, and rich discussion among participants.

This year, I'll be talking about Loyalty; session details and registration information is below. The conference runs from 8:30 am - 4:15 pm.

We often hear about loyalty as the answer to many of the challenges we face in our organizations related to retention, engagement, and creating healthy cultures and strong teams. But is loyalty as we have traditionally thought of it really enough, especially in today’s working environment, where U.S. workers spend an average of 4.2 years with their current employers? During this interactive, collaborative, and thought-provoking session, we will explore this question together, along with tools and strategies to raise the bar for our teams and our organizations.

Learning objectives:

  • Examine the benefits of loyalty and how to cultivate it within our teams and organizations.
  • Identify the limitations of loyalty and how it can actually prevent us from creating a culture of trust and transparency.
  • Uncover specific, actionable ways to increase trust, improve communication, and increase our results by taking the conversation a step further than loyalty.

Learn more about the conference and register here.
